Non-specific adsorption of marine organisms on solid surfaces causes serious problems. To inhibit marine fouling on solid surfaces, various methods have been investigated, and among them, hydrophilic polymer coatings have been extensively utilized owing to environment friendliness. However, drawbacks of such hydrophilic polymer coatings have been identified: when the coatings are exposed to marine sediment, minerals are easily adsorbed by the polymer coating, causing the coating to lose its inherent antifouling properties. In this respect, amphiphilic polymer coatings have been proposed as alternatives to hydrophilic polymer coatings. Herein, we report on the synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers composed of sulfobetaine methacrylate and ethylene glycol dicyclopentenyl ether acrylate and the grafting of the copolymers onto solid surfaces.
