Eco-friendly Organic Solar Cells Processed from Single Monoterpene Solvent

Eco-friendly solvent-processed organic solar cells (OSCs) are crucial for sustainable commercialization. Traditional solvents pose health and environmental risks, prompting the need for safer alternatives. We developed terpene-based solvents for high-performance OSCs. A Y-core material with long-branched alkyl chains formed a photoactive layer processed from monoterpene, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.53%, comparable to the 14.34% PCE from chloroform. In contrast, the blend with short alkyl side chains had a low efficiency of 0.13% due to poor solubility in single terpene solvent. The high-performance layer processed from single terpene showed consistent performance under ambient conditions, suggesting potential for mass production with eco-friendly solvents. This study demonstrates the feasibility of terpene-based solvents as sustainable substitutes for halogenated solvents in OSC fabrication, supporting further research to enhance their use and performance.
