Real-time on-site detection of Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺ metal ions in wastewater for environmental monitoring

Heavy metal ions from industry pollute the environment, contaminating food and water, and posing health risks. This study explores the rapid and optical detection of 20 different heavy metal ions, including Al³⁺, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cl^-, CO²⁺, Cu²⁺, Eu³⁺, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, HPO^4-, I^-, K⁺, Li⁺, Mg²⁺, Na²⁺, Ni²⁺, No^3-, Pb²⁺, SO^4-, and Zn²⁺. Carbon dots characterization using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques revealed their structural and optical properties. Additionally, we analyzed the UV stability of the carbon dots, which remained stable and retained their fluorescence intensity from 0 hours to 2 hours under UV exposure. Our results demonstrate selective and sensitive detection of Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Pb²⁺ ions over a wide concentration range, with detection limits in the ppm range.
