An additive, 1,4-butadiene sulfone (BDS), releases H2SO3 through thermal retro-Diels-Alder decomposition to produce high β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films. H2SO3 interacts with PVDF, inducing β-phase without mechanical drawing or extensive thermal annealing. PVDF films from PVDF/BDS/water solutions show 95% β-phase with 1.0 wt% BDS, confirmed by POM, SEM, FT-IR, DSC, and GIWAXS. These films exhibit excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties, enhancing triboelectric nanogenerator performance by 2.5 times over neat PVDF films.
