Artificial vision systems hold the potential for superior performance and efficiency comparable to the human visual system. The inherent ability to distinguish colors is a basic property of the retina, enabling it to proficiently detect and pro-process visual signals effectively. Therefore, it is vital to demonstrate photonic devices that possess multispectral color-discriminating synaptic capabilities to realize an artificial visual system. In this study, a floating gate-based photonic synapse, which has exceptional RGB color-discriminating synaptic functionality within a remarkable intensity range (0.05 to 40 mWcm-2) by leveraging the strong induced dipole moment effect at the excitation, modulated by the wavelength of the incident light, is designed. The effectiveness of this color-discriminating synaptic functionality is demonstrated by visual pre-processing on a photonic synapse array, thereby improving the inference accuracy of a CNN for colorful image recognition tasks over 94%.
