In the field of polymer science and engineering, the extrusion process stands as a crucial technique for manufacturing polymer blends and composites. This presentation focuses on the critical role of interfacial interactions during polymer extrusion, focusing on their impact on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the resultant materials. Polymer blends and composites often face challenges due to the inherent immiscibility and phase separation between different polymers. These issues can compromise the overall performance and durability of the final product. To address these challenges, this study explores the efficacy of interfacial compatibilizers in enhancing interfacial adhesion and promoting homogeneity. We investigated various compatibilization strategies, including the incorporation of specialized additives such as poly(maleic anhydride-alt-α-olefin), ethylene-co-acrylic acid, and cyclic olefin copolymers. The molecular design principles and synthesis methods of these compatibilizers were examined to understand their role in mitigating phase separation and improving material properties. Our findings demonstrated that effective interfacial compatibilization significantly enhanced the mechanical robustness, thermal stability, and overall performance of polymer blends and composites. By optimizing the interactions at the molecular level, we achieved a synergistic balance of properties tailored to meet specific performance requirements. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in interfacial compatibilization, offering insights into the future direction of polymer extrusion technology. As the demand for high-performance materials continues to grow, understanding and harnessing interfacial interactions during extrusion will be crucial for advancing the field of polymer science and engineering.
