Antimicrobial On-skin Polyurethane Nanofiber with CuO Nanoneedle

We developed antimicrobial on-skin polyurethane (PU) nanofiber with copper oxide (CuO) nanoneedle to prevent the bacterial and viral infections. PU was fabricated by electrospinning process. To synthesize CuO nanoneedle, Cu was deposited on PU nanofiber (~200 nm thickness) using vacuum evaporator, followed by immersion of Cu deposited PU in nanoneedle growth solution. Consequently, CuO nanoneedle with ~100 nm width and ~1 mm length was formed on PU nanofiber. Antibacterial effect of PU nanofiber with CuO nanoneedle was confirmed using E.coli and S.aureus bacteria which showed outstanding restraint of the formation of bacterial. Moreover, antiviral effect was evaluated using herpes and influenza viruses. Viral activity of both herpes and influenza viruses which were on the CuO nanoneedle showed remarkable decrease. Consequently, PU nanofiber with CuO nanoneedle shown excellent antimicrobial performances providing the potential for the applications of antimicrobial fiber.
