High-precision 3D cell spheroid printing technology to produce engineered tissue with enhanced functionality

Recently, various methods for spatial arrangement of cell spheroids were introduced, but they only allowed simple alignment and not precise patterning with multiple types of spheroids. This study developed a novel 3D cell spheroid printing technology capable of 3D micro-patterning with multiple cell spheroids. Three types of bio-ink were designed to deliver living cells, enabling precise control of spheroid size and position at a micro-scale, with a resolution of about 20 μm. The bioprinted spheroids showed excellent cytocompatibility and functionality, enhancing cell-to-cell and cell-ECM interactions. This technology was applied to cancer cell invasion assays and liver tissue engineering, significantly improving the functionality of engineered tissues. Our new method should provide an advanced tool for producing engineered tissues and tissue/disease models.
