Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have many advantages, including high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, and are used to lighten aircraft, but at Mach 2.7 and above, surface temperatures rise by more than 200 degrees, requiring a thermal barrier coating. Silica aerogels are promising materials for thermal insulation due to their very low thermal conductivity, and to maximize their thermal insulation properties, it is necessary to minimize the penetration of polymers applied as binders inside the porous silica aerogels. In this study, CFRP with enhanced thermal insulation properties was fabricated and its mechanical, thermal resistance, and thermal insulation properties were verified.
