Two extremely effective homoleptic complexes of meridional iridium(III) namely, tris[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-methyl-8-(trifluoromethyl)benzo[c][1,5] naphthyridin-6(5H)-one iridium(lll) (mer-MECF) and tris[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-methyl-8-(methoxy)benzo[c][1,5] naphthyridine-6(5H)-one]iridium(III) (mer-MEMO) were structurally designed and synthesized. The new Ir(III) complexes consist of naphthyridine-6(5H)-one unit used as a main ligand with different functional groups, which are trifluoromethyl(-CF3) in mer-MECF and methoxy(-OCH3) in mer-MEMO. Interestingly, both complexes showed formless green emission spectra with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). A solution-processed PHOLED with mer- MECF exhibited EQEmax of 21.1% and CEmax of 71.4 cd A-1. This result shows amide-bridged meridional Ir(III) complexes for the creation of extremely effective green solution-processed PHOLEDs.
