Continuous flow synthesis of furfural from biomass carbohydrates

The pursuit of new and versatile platform chemicals and biofuels derived from sustainable resources such as biomass carbohydrates is an essential task, driven by the urgent need to address the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and escalating global warming concerns. The efficient conversion of biomass carbohydrates into valuable furfural derivatives is a key process in producing these alternative chemicals and biofuels. In this study, we developed a synthetic method for obtaining 5-chloromethylfurfural from carbohydrates in high yields using continuous flow chemistry. The reaction was carried out by mixing carbohydrates dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid with an appropriate organic solvent while applying heat. Through this method, we achieved a CMF yield of over 80% and a purity of over 95%.
