Sustainability in polymer chemistry requires developing functional and eco-friendly polymers throughout their lifecycle. Acrylic polymers, used in pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), face recycling and degradation challenges due to strong C-C bonds. This study addresses these issues by creating a PSA with high adhesion and suitable viscoelastic behavior using vinylcyclopropane (VCP)-based monomers. VCP monomers undergo radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP) to form linear C=C bonds, allowing degradation through ozonolysis under mild conditions. This method enables molecular-level degradation, enhancing biodegradability and preventing microplastic formation. The VCP-based PSA shows comparable adhesion to conventional acrylic PSAs, maintains optical transparency, and degrades into small molecules in an eco-friendly solvent. This research offers a novel approach to sustainable, high-performance PSAs with applications in various fields, marking a significant step toward environmentally responsible polymer materials.
