Wounds on human skin undergo spontaneous healing via endogenous electric fields (EF). However, diabetes can impede this process, leading to chronic wounds with higher infection risk. Thus, wound healing patches that enhance endogenous EF have been explored to promote the healing of chronic wounds. Initially, metals were employed as electrodes for electrical stimulation. However, their rigidity led to the adoption of hydrogels which also exhibited the limitation of water evaporation under extreme conditions.
Herein, we introduce an ion gel designed for wound healing patches, characterized by its high conductivity and stability. Notably, water within the ion gel acts as a dissociation promoter for ions, enhancing stimulation efficiency due to its superior conductivity. Furthermore, the ionic liquid within the gel traps water, mitigating evaporation and ensuring long-term stability. We propose that this ion gel will serve as a blueprint for next-generation wound healing systems.
