Supercapacitor electrodes using carbon materials with hierarchical porous microstructures show excellent electrochemical performance. In this study, a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) consisting mainly of water and divinylbenzene was polymerized to produce a microcellular foam (polyHIPE), which was used as a template for a supercapacitor electrode material. The polyHIPE was activated with KOH and then carbonized at high temperature to obtain a carbon foam with a large specific surface area due to a micro-/meso-pore structure. In addition, the specific capacitance was further improved by adding nanofillers that impart redox reactions to the water phase of the emulsion. For this purpose, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with a transition metal compound TiO2 and a conductive polymer aniline, TiO2-PANI-CNT, were used as a nanofiller. The electrochemical performance with respect to the addition and content of the nanofiller was evaluated through analyses such as CV, GCD, and EIS.
