Nitrogen-coordinated single metal atoms supported on carbon (M-Nx/C) catalysts show exceptional activities in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, exploring the relationship between the support properties and catalytic activity is challenging due to conventional high-temperature pyrolysis, which induces multiple M-Nx coordination in the M-Nx/C catalysts. Here, Ni phthalocyanine with an Ni–N4 structure is loaded onto a series of nitrogen-doped carbon supports with varying pore sizes and graphitization degrees. We systematically investigated the effects of morphological and electrical properties on the CO2RR. The optimized catalyst demonstrates outstanding CO2RR performance due to the presence of mesoporous graphitic carbon and nitrogen in the supports.
