Synthesis of Bio-based Poly(ester amide) as a Sustainable Alternative to Commercial Leather

Natural leather has been used for various purposes due to its texture and durability. However, growing awareness of animal welfare and environmental pollution has driven consumer interest toward synthetic leather(vegan leather) as a substitution for natural leather. Nevertheless, vegan leather made of TPU and PVC faces significant challenges in replacing natural leather due to its use of petroleum-based raw materials and non-degradable properties. Herein, we synthesized biomass-based poly(ester amide) (PEA) that decomposes under composting conditions. We analyzed thermomechanical properties to apply as a vegan product and measured the friction coefficient to compare the similarity of haptic sensation with natural leather. As a result, PEA samples decomposed within 18 weeks, with a strength comparable to that of synthetic leathers, and showed a very similar haptic sensation to that of natural leather. This new material has the potential for use in sustainable vegan leather products.
