SKI Acid Resistant Yeast Platform and its Application to the Production of Lactic acid, a Monomer of Biodegradable Poly Lactic acid (PLA)

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), bio-based biodegradable polymer, has received significant attention. However, conventional PLA production methods face challenges in market penetration due to the relatively high production costs compared to petroleum-based polymers. To address these challenges, novel production methods have been developed, aiming to reduce the manufacturing costs thereby enhance its market competitiveness.
PLA is synthesized from lactic acid, which is typically produced via fermentation. Traditional lactic acid fermentation, using Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), requires neutral pH conditions due to LAB's limited tolerance to acidic environments, resulting in high production costs and complex downstream processing because of large salt production in neutralization.
Since yeast generally have better tolerance to acidic conditions, SKI screened an acid-resistant yeast and successfully developed it into a lactic acid-producing platform with an equivalent performance compared to LAB.
