Impact-Resistant Polyurethane Sealing Film Containing BHET for Secondary Batteries

Sealing tape for secondary batteries protects the electrode assembly without degrading performance. As the electric car market grows, the importance of such tape increases. Commercial polymer (PP, PET) sealing tapes do not dissolve in or absorb electrolytes, making them inflexible and poor at stress dispersion. This makes them ineffective at absorbing vibrations and impacts, posing risks in electric car. This study aims to develop TPU sealing tape by manufacturing a polyurethane film. The soft segment in the polyurethane film provides flexibility, absorbing and dispersing shocks effectively. When the film absorbs the electrolyte and expands, it can self-heal by filling micro-cracks. However, this can reduce mechanical strength. To address this, BHET with an aromatic structure is added during manufacturing. BHET enhances the film's strength by increasing intermolecular bonding. Polyurethane films with varying BHET content are then analyzed chemically and mechanically.
