Discontinuous Shear Thickening (DST) is a rheological phenomenon where the viscosity of a highly concentrated non-Newtonian fluid increases rapidly at high volume fractions. This phenomenon significantly impacts the manufacturing and performance of battery anode slurries. In our study, we observed DST in lithium-ion battery slurries. By measuring viscosity and stress changes across various slurry compositions and solid contents, we presented the DST mechanism, focusing on particle interactions in non-spherical systems. Our stress measurements confirmed that DST occurs due to particle aggregation within the slurry at volume fractions between Random Loose Packing (RLP) and Random Close Packing (RCP). At volume fractions greater than RCP, the slurry jams and becomes non-flowable. This study highlights the importance of DST in optimizing battery manufacturing processes and slurry design, providing crucial foundational data for the development of high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
