Melt Rheology and Mechanical Characteristics of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Nanocomposites with Mesoporous Hollow Silica Nanospheres

Aminated hollow mesoporous silica (AHMS) nanoparticles were synthesized by template synthesis and chemical modification. Their morphology, structure, and chemical structure were investigated using SEM, TEM, and FTIR. The AHMS was mixed with poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) using solution casting and coagulation to obtain PLA nanocomposite. The TGA test confirmed that adding filler significantly enhanced the thermal stability of PLA. The mechanical properties of the materials were monitored by UTM. They showed excellent tensile strength and elongation at break. According to the melt rheological data in the angular frequency sweep test, the composite materials' storage modulus increased compared to neat PLA. The Han plot and the van Gurp-Palmen plots were used to analyze the effect of fillers on the structural changes of the composite material. In addition, the complex viscosity curve and the shear viscosity curve obtained in the controlled shear rate test confirmed the Cox-Merz rule.
