This research addresses fouling in reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems, hindering efficient water treatment. Chitosan, a biopolymer with strong adsorption capabilities and mechanical stability, is used in ionic liquid solutions to improve fouling removal. The synergistic effect of chitosan and ionic liquids is examined across various particle sizes and pH conditions. Results show that smaller chitosan microbeads (average diameter = 32 ± 6.83µm) exhibit superior cleaning efficiency (86.9±1.3%) due to interactions between protonated amino groups of chitosan and fouling agents. At elevated pH levels, the combined action of ionic liquids and chitosan microbeads enhances cleaning by promoting fouling layer swelling and hydrolysis. The cleaning efficiency for the smallest bead group was 100.1±1.6%. This study highlights a promising strategy for RO membrane cleaning techniques and provides insights into the underlying mechanisms.
