Biomass-based 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA) can be an alternative to petroleum-based TPA, owing to the similar structural characteristics. The differences lie in its aromaticity and an angle between two carboxylic groups. As a result, FDCA shows rigidity, higher gas barrier, and elasticity. To maximize these benefits, we developed FDCA-based copolyesters with 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol(CHDM) and 1,3-propanediol(PDO) through two-step melt polymerization. The synthesized copolyester exhibits multifunctional properties compared to single-purpose predecessors. CHDM provides rigidity and stress relief through ring flipping, improving transparency and heat resistance while its aliphatic nature enhances weatherability. PDO promotes the formation of more helical motifs, which improves elastic properties. This study demonstrates the advanced features and potential of copolyester as a superior biodegradable polymer alternative.
