Precise Synthesis of Random Copolymers Containing Poly(4-Hydroxystyrene) Segment via Living Anionic Polymerization and Selective Deprotection

The anionic polymerization of 4-(tert-butyldimethylsiloxy)styrene (A), 4-tert-butoxystyrene (B), 4-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)styrene (C), which included styrene derivatives was performed using sec-butyllithium (sec-BuLi) as initiator in THF. At -30oC, the well-defined poly(A), poly(B), poly(C) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained quantitively for 10 min. Random copolymerization of A with B, C was carried out to prove the living nature of A and to simultaneously prepare well-defined ramdom copolymers containing poly(A) segment. Also, selective deprotection of ramdom copolymers was carried out using tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF) in THF at room temperature. The resulting ramdom copolymers containing poly(4-hydroxystyrene) was obtained.
