Synthesis of Sidechain Type Liquid Crystalline Polyether with Phenyl Benzoate

As the demand for electronics, electricity, automotive and medical fields increases, efforts to improve the physicochemical properties of devices or components are continuing. And Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) are gaining attention as high-performance materials. This study focuses on a side chain LCP designed to improve thermal properties and control LC behavior.
We designed and synthesized epoxide monomers containing phenyl benzoate mesogens with varying lengths of alkyl chains, then polymerized them via anionic ring-opening polymerization to obtain polymers with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) backbone.
DSC and POM were used to analyze the phase transition characteristics and LC properties. The difference in LC behavior and glass transition temperature according to the different alkyl chain length of the side chain were confirmed. And the synthesized polymer exhibited enhanced thermal properties compared to existing PEG. Detailed explanation will be discussed in the presentation.
