Fabrication of Volume Phase Holographic Gratings for Augmented Reality Displays Using Visibly Transparent Photoaddressable Polymers

Photoaddressable polymers (PaPs) are promising materials for developing ideal volume phase holographic gratings (VPHGs), also known as optical Fourier volumes. PaPs are typically composed of azobenzene-based liquid crystalline moieties and tend to change their molecular alignment perpendicular to polarized light, causing patternable refractive index variations. However, azobenzene-containing PaPs have a distinctive absorption band at 400-500 nm, which is not suitable for RGB displays. In this work, to minimize the absorption of blue light and fabricate an RGB functional AR display, visibly transparent PaPs were synthesized via ATRP. Using polarization interference patterning, VPHGs were successfully inscribed into thick films, demonstrating high efficiency and ease of fabrication for sinusoidal patterns. Furthermore, a simple waveguide-type AR display was fabricated, confirming that RGB light is transmitted to the out-coupler. These results indicate the potential of these transparent PaPs for advanced AR display technologies.
