Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone conformation was considered strongly related to crystallization ability. While trans-trans conformation made curved molecules, causing crystallization reluctance, trans-gauche conformation seemed to be favored for crystallization. Recently, we reported a novel method of PMMA crystallization by rapid thermal quenching with benzoic acid as the entropy diluents, resulting in a unique 1-dimensional hypo-crystals structure. In this research, by utilizing FT-IR analysis with peak deconvolution, we confirmed that in our hypo-crystal PMMA, the trans-gauche proportion dramatically increased to more than 40%, well-packed the polymer chain, and hindered thermal relaxation, thus stable below glass transition temperature or up to 1 day of annealing. The results suggested polymer chain conformation in the crystal structure and detailed mechanism behind our crystallization method.
