Water vapor can diffuse through polymeric dense films. However, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge on how water molecules penetrate polymeric films. We here develop the nanocellulose-based polymeric films that exhibit selective and permeable water vapor. To understand the unusual water vapor transport properties, we carried out the water vapor transport features in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic aspects as a function of relative humidity using various transport characteristic tools. Additionally, we conducted detailed cavity characterizations using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Atomic Force Microscopy to elucidate selective diffusion of water vapor through the nanocellulose films. We will discuss in detail focusing on the distinctive water vapor permeation properties of the nanocellulose-based polymers in this presentation.
