In recent years, the synthesis of sustainable flame retardants has attracted much interest due to their enhanced safety attributes and environmental compatibility. Herein, we collected the fly ash (FA) waste and discarded polystyrene (PS) foam, and employed an electrospinning strategy to incorporate FA particles into PS nanofibers. The as-prepared FA/PS nanofiber composite was characterized by a state-of-art technique. The morphological examination by FESEM revealed that the FA particles were well-distributed on the PS fibers. Due to the incorporation of FA particles, the mechanical properties of the composite were slightly increased. The limited oxygen index (LOI) was employed to quantify the flammability of the prepared composite. The LOI values for pristine PS and FA/PS composite fibers were recorded as 17 and 24 %, respectively. The results showed that it could be an effective strategy to utilize the waste material for environmental issues as well as fire-retardant applications.
