Increasing plastic accumulation has strengthened environmental regulations and adherence to ESG principles, leading to the development of many recycling technologies for sustainability. However, as plastic is reused, additive content increases, reducing recycles and polymer performance. Herein, we provide a new method for condensation polymerization theory-based chemical recycling. Poly(butylene-terephthalate) (PBT), a terephthalic acid-based polyester, has a wide variety of attractive applications, including automotive, electronic components, and consumer products. Through analyzing condensation mechanism, quantitative understanding of diol as a nucleophile was achieved to continue its process as one-pot catalyst-free chemical repolymerization. The presented method may provide a new paradigm, and its application can be expected to be expanded.
