Among the various conjugated polyelectrolytes, the polyacetylene-based polyelectrolytes have been prepared by the modification of substituted polyacetylenes via the ionization of the side groups and the direct synthesis of ionic polyacetylenes via the transition metal-catalyzed polymerization of the corresponding ionic acetylenes. Here, we report on synthesis of polyacetylene polyelectrolyte via thea-bromoisobutyryl bromide-induced quaternization polymerization of ethynylpyridines without any additional catalysts. The polymerization proceeded homogeneously to give the resulting polymer. The chemical structure of polymer was characterized by various instrumental methods. The optical absorption spectrum of polymer showed the maximum peaks of 334 and 411 nm as well as the broad absorption in the range of 400∼800 nm. This polymer exhibited the irreversible electrochemical behaviors between the doping and undoping peaks
