Microneedles (MNs) have been extensively exploited as a painless method for transdermal drug delivery and diagnostics. In part 1 of my talk, I will introduce recent trends and progress on microneedle-assisted transdermal drug delivery and present a new approach using drug-coated MN patches prepared by low-temperature multiple micro-dispensing system. After selective and multiple coating of drug solutions on MN tips, accurate intradermal delivery of high-dose biologics (live vaccines, peptides, and exosomes) can be achieved. In part 2, I will introduce a sensitive detection platform using nanoporous MN arrays based on immunoassay. The immuno-functionalized MNs showed a rapid capture of preeclampsia biomarkers present at sub-nanogram level following 1 min incubation time. This MN-mediated sensing platform can be employed to detect diverse biomarkers including metabolites and proteins and could be integrated into a handheld system for point-of-care clinical diagnostics.
