Advancing rechargeable batteries has become one of the most critical challenges for a sustainable and greener future. Cost-effective and high-performance batteries can significantly increase the fuel efficiency of new transportation technologies, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, all-electric vehicles, and heavy machinery, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this talk, Dr. Lee will explain the importance of electric vehicles and batteries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He will then discuss strategies to increase the market penetration of electric vehicles, focusing on battery price and performance. Following this, he will introduce recent innovative technologies for advancing rechargeable batteries, such as solid-state batteries and various metal batteries with new carbon-metal hosts and polymer-based electrolyte systems. Dr. Lee will also address the challenges associated with these emerging technologies and their potential for commercialization.
