A new type of amphiphilic diblock copolymers of amorphous poly(γ-phenyl-ɛ-caprolactone) (PγPhCL) and crystalline poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was synthesized. Bayer-Villager oxidation was employed to synthesize γ-phenyl-ɛ-caprolactone (γ-PhCL) which was ring opening polymerized using a diphenyl phosphate (DPP) to avoid transesterification during the polymerization. The chemical structure of block copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR analyses. The DSC data show the melting temperatures of the PEO block at around 55˚C for all block copolymers with different compositions. However, the crystallinity of the PEO block decreased from 80.2 to 45.6 % with increasing the molecular weight of PγPhCL block, possibly due to difficulty of ordered chain packing by bulky phenyl group.
