Multifunctional third component for ternary organic solar cells and organic photodetectors

Ternary organic solar cells (TOSCs) and ternary organic detectors (TOPDs) are promising strategies for increasing device performance. In this study, we designed D-A type structure, A-YBO-2F and A-YBO-2Cl. We introduced them as third components into the TOSCs and TOPDs. Asymmetric acceptors were synthesized by modifying the side chain and terminal group. D-A type acceptor has several advantages when used as a third component. First, it can have complementary absorption with the host donor and host acceptor. Second, the emission of the asymmetric acceptor and the absorption of the host acceptor overlap, allowing energy transfer from the asymmetric acceptor to Y6. Finally, since A-YBO-2F and A-YBO-2Cl have large dipole moments of 11.56 and 11.76 debye, respectively, they can enhance the morphology within the active layer and increase charge transport, which can improve TOSCs and TOPDs performance. This study can provide insight for the molecular design of the third component for high performance TOSCs and TOPDs.
