Low voltage-driven reverse mode liquid crystal smart window stabilized with polymer composite of mesogenic monomer and thiol-terminated crosslinker

Smart windows capable of changing the optical transmittance are applied in buildings and mobilities. Polymer stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs) have attracted interest due to the capability of manufacturing large area devices. PSLCs change the transmittance from initially transparent state to the scattering state through applied voltage. However, it is challenging to achieve the low level of driving voltage while preserving the degree of transmittance modulation range. We propose a smart window based on PSLCs that employs non-mesogenic thiol-terminated crosslinker to achieve low driving voltage. We characterized the transmittance modulation range and driving voltage of PSLC mixtures, which consist of mesogenic monomer RM257 and pentaerythritol tetrakis (PETMP) in different solvents. We found that incorporating PETMP decreases the driving voltage to achieve maximum transmittance modulation range when comparing with the PSLC containing RM257 without PETMP at the same concentration.
