Plastics are discharged into the marine and soil environments through rainwater runoff, wastewater, and rivers, and the environmental pollution caused by this is a global problem. In particular, microplastics (5 mm or less) have been reported to pose a potential threat to humans, organisms, and ecosystems due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. Therefore, research on the effects of microplastics and their removal and decomposition has been conducted considerably, but research on the mechanism of decomposition and removal is insufficient. Advanced oxidation processes are used in actual wastewater treatment and have high potential for research on decomposition and removal of microplastics because they can easily decompose pollutants through radicals with high oxidation potential. In this study, we attempted to confirm the mechanism of decomposition and removal of microplastics through an advanced oxidation process using reactive oxygen species.
