Detailed cavity characterizations of fluorinated polyimide films for hydrogen separation applications

In gas separation polymer membranes, the cavity within the polymer matrix is the critical determinants of separation performance, especially influencing permeability and selectivity. However, it still remains unclear about the fundamental correlation between cavity properties and gas transport behaviors. Here, we develop a method to tune the cavity size and distribution using fluorinated polyimide polymers as a model polymer. To do so, we prepared various fluorinated polyimide films with identical chemical structures to elucidate how polymer chain packing characteristics, as measured by density and d-spacing influence gas transport properties. We also conducted detailed cavity characterizations using BET adsorption behaviors and PALS measurements to confirm the effect of cavity features on the gas transport. From that, we found the veiled relationship between cavity properties and H2 separation performances. Further details will be shown in this presentation.
