Mechanochromic Strain Evaluation of Stretchable Interconnectsusing Chiral Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Stretchable interconnects serve as an essential part of soft electronics, enabling devices to maintain functionality even when bent, stretched, or twisted. However, all stretchable interconnects are exposed to non-uniform strains during mechanical deformations, yet accurately measuring these strains presents a significant challenge. Furthermore, tracking and analyzing these dynamic, non-uniform strains in real-time is even more challenging. Here, we present a method for analyzing the strain of stretchable interconnects using CLCE (Chiral Liquid Cyrstal Elastomers), which exhibit immediate structural color changes in response to mechanical deformations. This integration of stretchable electronics and photonic systems promises to be a breakthrough in accommodating complex mechanical deformations.
