Synthesis of Bio-Based Citronellol-Derived Bactericidal Polymers and Effect of Functional Groups on Their Bactericidal Activity

Citronellol-derived methacrylate polymers, PCHM-Xs, having different side chain interconnecting groups are synthesized to prepare a new bio-based antibacterial polymers. The properties of these functional groups such as zeta-potential, surface energy, and polymer chain-bacterial membrane interaction affect the bactericidal activities and bacterial adhesion. Among PCHM-Xs, PCHM-SO, shows the best antibacterial activity due to the strongest interactions with bacterial membrane components.
