Polymer microspheres featuring a bio-based cardanol group were synthesized through the suspension polymerization of 2-hydroxy-3-cardanylpropyl methacrylate (CM). These microspheres incorporated cardanol, which endowed them with bactericidal properties, and developed a cross-linked structure due to the reactions among the double bonds present in the cardanol groups during polymerization. Both the microspheres made from CM and the films cast from these microsphere suspensions exhibited strong antibacterial effectiveness against E.coli, attributed to their ability to disrupt bacterial cell walls through contact without leaching antibacterial agents. Additionally, all polymeric films derived from these microspheres and their copolymers demonstrated good biocompatibility, independent of their monomer compositions.
