Detection of specific chemicals in water is a challenging task regardless of the nature of the target molecule. More specifically, chemical sensing in water without the use of specialized instrumentation is a formidable challenge that entails significant implications in a wide range of areas, ranging from water purification to military applications, if various difficulties can be addressed. Herein we discuss the design, synthesis, and sensing schemes involving polymers as probes in the detection of important chemicals in water. For the target compounds that have a unique pi electronic structure, detection based on amplified fluorescence quenching of water-dispersible fluorescent polymers is discussed. For non-aromatic targets, tailor-made reactive polymers that produce visual changes upon reaction with desired target molecules are demonstrated.
