Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) are popular for gas detection due to their sensitivity, miniaturization, and stability. However, p-type MOS-based sensors like NiO face challenges in sensitivity and selectivity due to lower hole mobility compared to electrons. Noble metallic nanocatalysts (NCs) are incorporated to compensate, promoting oxygen ions spillover and enhancing sensing reactions. Bimetallic noble nanoparticles (NPs) offer improved catalytic characteristics compared to monometallic ones. In this study, bimetallic Au@Pt NCs were applied to p-type NiO nanohelices (NHs) to enhance gas sensor performance. Functionalizing Au@Pt NCs controls O2 adsorption strength on the sensor surface, crucial for sensor response. Uniform decoration of Au@Pt NCs on NiO NHs using Polyethylene glycol (PEG) increases surface area, providing more active sites for O2 and NO2 adsorption. This approach offers a promising strategy to overcome limitations of p-type gas sensors for enhanced performance.
