Excellent electrical conductivity and electromagnetic Interference shielding performance of metal-coated carbon fibers incorporated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Metal-coated carbon fibers (MCFs) have the advantages of both metal and carbon fiber, exhibiting excellent electrical and mechanical properties. Due to high electrical conductivity, MCFs have received a lot of attention as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. However, its high-cost limited commercialization for the EMI shielding materials. In this study, to reduce the usage of MCF contents, we fabricated the hybrid composites containing MCFs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The composites with optimized filler ratio showed the enhanced EMI shielding effectiveness, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of MCFs and MWCNTs. Therefore, the manufactured composites are expected to offer excellent electrical properties with reducing costs, making it promising materials for commercialization as EMI shielding materials.
