Structural and Functional Recovery of Protective Coatings For Vision Systems

Over the past decade, structural and functional recovery of protective coatings, applicable to lens of vision systems such as augmented reality glasses, images, and sensors, has received much attention as a method to prolong the service life of products. In this study, we designed a polythiourethane dynamic network containing a photothermal N-butyl-substituted dimonium borate dye, and confirmed its potential application in self-healing protective coatings for vision systems by securing high transparency (~95% in the visible region), controllable optical properties (refractive index, Abbe number) and high surface hardness (>200 MPa). The developed protective coating showed an increase in surface temperature to 75°C through the photothermal effect when exposed to near-infrared (NIR) radiation. Through the dynamic thiourethane exchange reaction, it was confirmed that the surface scratches were healed and the optical signal distorted by the scratched surface of the coating was completely restored.
