Raw-materialization of lignocellulosic biomass and its application

As an alternative to reducing environmental burdens caused by the indiscriminate use of petroleum resources, interest is growing in the biochemical industry, which produces chemical products using lignocellulosic biomass, a sustainable and eco-friendly raw material. Lignocellulosic biomass consists of 40-45% cellulose, 20-30% hemicellulose, and 20-30% lignin, so efficient utilization of all components is essential to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. In addition to the use of cellulose for existing pulp papermaking, research is underway to develop new materials such as cellulose nanofibers and nanocrystals. In addition, despite efforts to replace binders, plasticizers, and phenolic resins with lignin, its use is limited due to the difficulty in predicting the physical properties of the final product. Therefore, in this presentation, we will cover the raw material preparation steps for efficient use of each component in the overall utilization of lignocellulosic biomass.
