Synthesis of High Oxygen Permeable Ionomer Using Suspension Polymerization Process

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is considered suitable for a future clean mobility. The reduction of the cost of fuel cells has mainly focused on reducing Pt catalyst due to its high cost. The Pt catalyst is surrounded by a thin layer of ionomer, and oxygen permeation through this layer is critical to the performance of low Pt-loaded cathodes. Perfluorinated sulfonic acid ionomers, widely used as electrolyte membrane in PEMFC, is not optimal choice for the high oxygen permeable ionomer. Instead, dioxole-structured monomers have been recently found to be an alternative solution, because they disrupt the packing of the polymer chain to provide higher oxygen permeability.In this work, high oxygen permeable ionomers are synthesized using suspension polymerization process with perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole and perfluorinated sulfonyl fluoride monomers. Effects of various polymerization variables on the yield and molecular weight of the prepared ionomers were investigated.
