Green hydrogen production through water electrolysis (WE) without CO2 emissions is gaining significant attention. Among various WE technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is considered optimal for high-performance, low-cost hydrogen production. Although AEMWE has demonstrated high performance, it still faces durability issues due to ionomer oxidation. We compared the performance and durability of ionomers with different backbones but similar ion exchange capacity (IEC), focusing on the degree of ionomer oxidation. Variations in the backbone structure lead to differences in the adsorption energy of the ionomer's phenyl groups. Our results indicate that oxidation caused by adsorption is a crucial factor affecting both performance and durability.
