Using DNA as a Genuine Polymer and Their Real-World Applications

Believing in the concept that DNA is a genuine polymer, over the last 24 years, my group at Cornell University has been engineering DNA molecules as both a genetic as well as a generic material. Indeed, DNA is an amazing polymer with more than 4000 nanoscale tools (enzymes) that no other polymers have. In addition, DNA is a biocompatible and also biodegradable material. Moreover, precise DNA can be obtained from a synthesizer (synthetic DNA) and large amounts of DNA can be extracted from any organism (biomass DNA). For In this talk, I will focus on how we have designed and engineered DNA-based materials in large scale for real-world applications from portable biosensing to synthetic cells to degradable plastics. With the ongoing artificial intelligent (AI) revolution, we believe that DNA-based materials will be the ideal material interfacing with AI and that DNA-based materials will become a versatile and sustainable intelligent material for the world in the near future.
