Over the last decade, significant advancements have been made in the development of chalcogenide hybrid inorganic/organic polymers (CHIPs) from waste sulfur for diverse applications, including energy storage, mercury removal, and infrared (IR) optics. Despite these advances, creating CHIPs that are highly transparent to IR and possess broadly controllable, robust thermomechanical properties for advanced optical applications continues to pose challenges. In this presentation, we introduce innovative synthetic strategies designed to tailor the network structure of CHIPs, thereby enhancing the application-specific optical and thermomechanical characteristics. We also explore the benefits of post-thermal treatment as an effective approach to optimize these properties. This discussion aims to shed light on the underlying structure-property relationships of CHIPs and explore their potential for wide-ranging practical uses.
