Spent coffee ground (SCG) was used as a biochar precursor due to its composition consisting of organic compounds. SCG biochar fabricated by carbonization exhibited a porous structure in various studies. Materials with the porous structure have high potential as a filler for thermally insulation composite. However, during composite fabrication, the porous filler could be impregnated by the matrix. The pore restoration method was used to maintain the pores in the porous filler by pre-mixing a solvent with the filler and then removing the solvent after composite fabrication. In this study, thermally insulation composites were fabricated with SCG biochar and ethyl cellulose, and various solvents were applied to select the optimal solvent for maximizing the preservation of pores considering the chemical affinity of the used materials. Additionally, the pore restoration effect according to solvent type on thermal conductivity was investigated.
